BLACKPINK (stylized as BLΛƆKPIИK) is a globally recognized South Korean girl group formed by YG Entertainment. The group consists of four members: Jisoo, Jennie, Rosé, and Lisa. They debuted on August 8, 2016, with the digital single album “SQUARE ONE”, featuring the tracks “Boombayah” and “Whistle.” The release quickly established them as one of the most prominent names in the kpop industry.
As YG Entertainment’s first girl group since 2NE1, BLACKPINK attracted significant attention prior to their debut. The members had already built public interest through various pre-debut appearances. Jennie was featured in labelmates’ songs and music videos, Lisa was recognized as a standout Thai trainee, and Jisoo appeared in several music videos and television productions. These early exposures contributed to the group’s rapid rise in popularity.
BLACKPINK set multiple digital records with their music. The 2018 single “DDU-DU DDU-DU” became the most-viewed Korean music video within 24 hours at the time and later became the most-viewed kpop group video on YouTube. In 2020, the release of “How You Like That” broke several YouTube records, including the most views in 24 hours for any video on the platform, further strengthening their global impact.
BLACKPINK became the first female kpop group to perform at Coachella, a milestone that significantly expanded their reach into Western markets. Their return to the festival as headliners marked a historic moment in kpop’s global crossover, highlighting the group’s influence beyond music charts.
Group contract renewals with YG Entertainment ensured BLACKPINK would continue performing together, although the members chose to pursue their solo careers independently. Jennie established ODD ATELIER, Lisa created LLOUD, Jisoo launched BLISSOO, and Rosé signed with The Black Label. Each member has since expanded their creative reach while maintaining group activities.
Plans for a new comeback and a world tour were confirmed for 2025, continuing the group’s legacy as one of the most influential girl groups in modern music history. BLACKPINK remains a defining force in the global expansion of kpop.
