It’s crazy…Korean drama that broke out two days after its first broadcast and swept “Netflix #1” in 9 countries

The original Korean Netflix series has been receiving explosive responses since its release, continuing its global box office run. It is the drama “Can This Love Be Translated?” starring actors Go Youn-jung and Kim Seon-ho.

According to Flixpatrol’s tally, the drama ranked No. 1 on Netflix in nine countries, including Korea, Indonesia, Malaysia, Peru, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam. It ranked fourth in the Global Top 10 Non-English Show category.

In Korea, it ranked No. 1 on Netflix within two days of its release and remained at the top for nine consecutive days. On the third day of its release, it rose to No. 2 on the global top 10 non-English shows, and was listed on the top 10 list in a total of 36 countries, including Brazil, Mexico, Portugal, Morocco, Saudi Arabia and Singapore.

“Can You Interpret This Love?” is a romantic comedy in which Ju Ho-jin (Kim Seon-ho), a multilingual interpreter who speaks six languages, translates for world-renowned top star Cha Mu-hee (Go Youn-jung). The 12-episode series was directed by Yoo Young-eun. Japanese actor Fukush Sota participated in the series to raise the level of perfection, while Moon Se-yoon, Jun Hyun-moo, Na Hyun-young, Kang Han-na, Lee Joon, and Roh Jae-won participated as special guests to add to the fun.

Kim Seon-ho played the role of an interpreter who needed emotional performances that were both rational and delicate. “Being Joo Ho-jin is a neat and plain person; it was important for him to perform emotional performances in detail,” Yoo Young Eun said at the production presentation. “In this regard, Kim Seon-ho had a lot of trust in him, and he performed well in comic, romance and cool-headed character. It was an irreplaceable casting.”

Go Youn-jung took on the role of Cha Mu-hee, who went from an unknown actor to a global star after waking up unconscious from a fall accident while filming the movie. Even Dorami, a key unexpected character in the play, showed her presence by playing two roles. “Go Youn-jung’s Cha Mu-hee character is plump and transparent and candid,” Yoo Young Eun said. “Go Youn-jung is a lovely actor who is honest and transparent in many videos, and shows that she gets nervous when she gets nervous.”

In a recent interview, Go Youn-jung said she realised the popularity of the drama. “Yesterday, I got 10 million followers on Instagram. It was a cute setting for Cha Mu-hee to talk about 10 million followers in the drama, but I got 10 million followers through this drama. I think I can give meaning to them,” she said.

As for the reason for choosing the piece, she said, “I received up to four parts of the script for the first time. Although Dorami is a delusion of martial arts, it has not come out as a reality yet. At the end of the seventh part, as Dorami comes out, she becomes a reality; she becomes eroded. Until I learned such a story, the setting of a love story between an interpreter and an actress seemed to have been refreshing. I have never worked on a piece where romance is the main theme. ‘Alchemy of Souls’ is a fantasy historical drama, and ‘Resident Playbook’ has a melodrama, but it was basically a medical growth drama. That’s why I was lucky enough to do this work when I thought I wanted to try romance.”

The film was shot in four countries: Japan, Canada, Italy, and Korea. “When choosing a location, we chose a venue with a completely different atmosphere so that viewers could feel the travelling feeling. I tried to communicate with the emotions of the characters, not just the background,” Yoo said. “Japan, which contains their first encounter, cared for fresh and cute emotions, and Italy, which contains the latter half of the narrative, tried to portray the emotions of the characters as a more romantic moment. We maximised the emotions of the characters by using the background as an element that could express the emotional atmosphere of the two characters.”

It was also noted that the Hong sisters, who released hits such as “Sassy Girl Chun-yang” and “Master’s Sun,” returned to pure romantic comedy after eight years. Director Yoo said, “When I saw the script, the stories of the characters were warm and lovely. I felt that they were people who use all characters lovingly. While working, I made the results through many conversations, and I had a lot of fun while directing the fairytale and pure gaze that the writers have.”

In a recently released still, sweet moments and tense scenes of Ju Ho-jin and Cha Mu-hee were captured. It contains various moments, including the dark side of Dorami in contrast to the bright dance and the two on the verge of kissing.

Go Youn-jung will meet viewers in the first half of this year with her upcoming JTBC Saturday-Sunday drama “We Are All Trying Here.” Kim Seon-ho will make another transformation with the Disney+ drama “Portraits of Delusion,” in which she co-starred with Suzy.
